The City of North Vancouver is shaping a 20 year vision for Central Lonsdale to become one of the city’s most dynamic and welcoming streets. Ultimately a hub filled with a wide range of places, activities, and businesses that support everyday life, work, and leisure.
Plans will be shaped around the following:
Supporting local businesses – helping legacy businesses stay in place through relocation support, a legacy business program, and possible tax exemptions.
Shaping future development – ensuring new projects fit the village character with smaller storefronts, preserved mountain views, and walkable, human‑scale design.
Enhancing the public realm – creating a more inviting area with concepts such as wider sidewalks, benches, trees, patios, and pocket plazas.
Over the longer term, Central Lonsdale could see a new theatre, a hotel near the hospital, rooftop dining patios, and open-air comedy shows in plaza spaces.
The City has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with several partners to advance a Health Innovation District (HID) around Lions Gate Hospital. The goal? To supports its broader vision of becoming the Healthiest Small City in the World. Founding partners include Capilano University, Vancouver Coastal Health, North Shore Division of Family Practice, Life Sciences BC, Adera Development, Millennium Development Group, TELUS Health and Invest Vancouver.
The City is aiming to be a leader of healthy living, healthy aging, and aging in place. At the same time supporting community well-being and helping to reduce pressures on the healthcare system. The initial focus areas of the HID will include prevention and wellness, recreation and rehabilitation, and digital health technology.
It's not a finished plan, but a guide. Future councils may choose to pursue the vision in different ways.
